Baseline Assessment of Streptococcus Pneumoniae of India Serotypes (BASIS): Surveillance of Streptococcus Pneumoniae

Objective

1. To establish a model platform for surveillance to diagnose pneumonia and to isolate Streptococcus pneumoniae in the community
2. To diagnose invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) among children younger than five years of age and isolate Streptococcus pneumoniae from them
3. To determine patterns of VT pneumococcus colonizing in nasopharynx of children 2-59 months of age, diagnosed with pneumonia and IPD, in a community setting and monitor changes in their serotypes over time. This will be continuous data collection over the period
4. To monitor pattern of naso-pharyngeal VT pneumococcal colonization in the school going children aged 5-11 yrs at baseline before introduction of PCV vaccine in the area
